My strategy with BANS And HostGator Reseller account
I recently started using BANS on a HostGator reseller package. I must admit that my other host(shared) was much easier to use but did not offer a reseller options and I was limited to 25 MySQL /package and 100MB per databases. HostGator is unlimited on both counts but cost a little more for the non reseller account versus the my other host.
The reseller package also offer much less monthly bandwidth than a shared hosting package. Of course, I was not using all of it anyway. For me, the reseller side is new and I wanted to share my strategy with you.
First, I needed to pick a new domain name($15/year) for the "hosting" company. I did not want to use any of my other domains for that.
Second, I used the default Reseller package for the hosting company with a blank page for now.(10MB space, 1MB/month)
Third, I created( use Add packages in WHM) a simple hosting package(20MB space, 1GB/month) for my first BANS. I can modify it to feet my need later on.
Edit: It's now 20MB of space to leave room for stats.
Fourth, I used the same above package for my second BANS.
Fifth, this is when I saw that eventually, upgrading BANS could take longer to do and be a pain. For each BANS, I would have to FTP to each domains and upload the upgrades.
Edit: I will go with one package per bans. So, if I get disable because it had reach the monthly quota, only one domain will be affected and not the whole package. Plus, using Justin's method, I will save a lot of time when creating a BANS site. I just hope the software don't get updated to often.
That's in the WHM panel:

After that, I will Create a New Account with that package for myself. In my case, it was by using my second BANS site.

The rest is done using the cpanel of ban_0
So, I get this(FTP):
.cpanel
.trash
.access-logs
etc
mail
public_ftp
public_html (ban_0 my initial BANS in the package is here)
tmp
www
That's my strategy working with HostGator and BANS. What is yours? Got any tips to help others?
Edit 1: I changed it with 1Account to hold 1 bans site.

Hate to say this, I have an unlimited account with dreamhost, have been adding domains and setting up hosting with those domains, but what you wrote was just gibberish to me. I’m not very tech savy, I just know how to do what I”m doing now. I’m pretty sure I’m not using a reseller account, but who knows.

Shawn, I had unlimited domains too on my other package. I was limited in other area like MySql.
The reseller account is not on the same server has a shared host thus the speed will be faster because you have less domains on it. But the biggest think is that if you have a site that gets popular and start to use too much server resource, they will kick you out fast. I can understand because I don’t want my own sites to be slowed because of the success of someone else site.
The “gibberish” was for those with Hostgator. The terms are different from host to host. At least, with the 5-6 hosts I used so far. Cpanel is the most popular for the hosting companies not using their own internal panels.

I’m making ebay affiliate sites using wordpress instead of BANS. The problem I’m having with my hosting is that I’m making hundreds to tens of thousands of posts (1 per item) so when I try to make a sitemap it’s taking like a minute to make the sitemap; I’m limited to 30 seconds of server time per request.

Hey Steve,
It’s nice dropping by your blog, I see you often at Vic’s. Man, this stuff is still over my head! When I signed up with HG I entered one domain. That one is there. When I went to change the name servers for my other 45 domains that seemed to go alright. Godaddy changed the server to the ones given to me by HG. Problem is, when I go to HG they only have that one domain listed there for me…not the other 45.
as far as allowing so much space and bandwidth I have no idea what to do. Should all of my domains be on the same two nameservers?
I’m sure your post will come in handy once I make it “around the corner”…but for now I need some step by step. Any recommendations?

Hi Chris and welcome,
I only changed the nameservers on Godaddy for the ones I created the Addon Domains too. In your case, it’s 45 domains.
Create another package for your bans with the numbers I shown you using the WHM(not cpanel).
It’s a 2 steps in ours case using Godaddy.
1- Create the new domain in your HG package and then change the nameservers on Godaddy. Do you have the 45 domains created on your HG account or did only changed the nameservers on Godaddy?
2- Change the nameservers on Godaddy. I used the default nameservers only and not the private one.Did that help you understand the process better?

Steve,
What I did was get my 45 domains at godaddy. Sign up for a reseller account with HG. When I signed up to HG i had to enter a domain name. I guess this is the Primary domain (?). HG sent me an email with my two name servers. I went to godaddy and change my name server (for the initial domain only) and that went well. Then I went back to godaddy and changed the rest of the 44 domains name servers to the ones that HG gave me.
I got confirmation from Godaddy that all of my domains have had the name servers changed to Hostgator’s.So in HG i have one account. That’s the initial domain. Here I am stuck.
Steve, I thought that after changing the DNS for all of my domains I would be able to go to HG and see all my domains listed there. I don’t. I thought I would be able to go to the WHM and have access to all 45 of my domains. See, I’m totally stuck on level 1.
I’m supposed to end up with 45 seperate domains right? Not one main domain and 44 sub domains…give me another clue please.

Steve I think I’m on to something here. Do you just keep on creating new accounts? I didn’t use the add on domain thing yet. I just kept creating new accounts adding my domain names one by one. Damn! I am so techically challenged.
What I’m thinking is just creating 45 accounts with all of my domain names. Is it that easy?

That method is also okay and check
Justin video when using an account for each like you are doing. He gave a tip that should save you time.Me, I have the big BANS package and create addon domains. It’s different but I asked Justin a questions about that.

Steve, I finally got the hang of it. Justins tips about using the skel file makes it super fast. I installed bans 45 times in about 2 hours. Piece of cake once you get in the groove of it and you have the system down.
It’s definitely a pain in the ass setting up 100 bans sites but I’m sure it’s worth it. Hell, if I only average .20 per day per site, I would make a thousand of them equaling $200 per day. I think Vic is right when he says it’s all about bulk.

I only found out about the fact that we should have bans on seperate accounts yesterday when vic talked about. Now I’m trying to figure out how to transfer from an add-on domain to a separate account. So far the only way I’ve figured it out is to delete the add-on domain and then start from scratch.
I really need to figure out a faster method…

Chris: You know that if someone find one of those 45 domains, they can use it until you realize it? Just to make sure that you are aware of that. If it happens, you are not lucky
April: You could copy the MySQL (addon domain) and import it after it’s moved to it’s own package. I never did that. Ihope you don’t have to many of them.
I updated my post using the new strategy.

Hey Steve,
Great job with the walk through! Sorry it has taken me so long to get over to see it…I’ve been busy with my BANS sites {grin}.
@Shawn, dude if you’re gonna make a real go at trying the eBay affiliate stuff, you have to look at BANS. CAN you do it with WP and a plug-in? Sure. I can also drive a nail with a screwdriver, that doesn’t mean it is the best tool for the job though. And Steve’s right about reseller vs shared hosting. Night and day difference. Again, CAN you make it work that way? Yes. SHOULD you make it work that way? Probably not.
It looks like everything I would have added you guys have already figured out…but I’m gonna throw out a few ideas anyway.
1. Remember that GoDaddy and HostGator are two different platforms. Changing a value (NameServers) at GoDaddy only changes it at GoDaddy and tells the rest of the Internet where to look for your domain name. You have to setup that domain name at HostGator as well so the HostGator server knows where to send your guests.
2. Get a reseller account!
3. Use the SKEL folder on your master account. Files in this folder are copied to every new account you create so if you upload your BANS files to the skel directory, every time you create a new account they will already be there.
***BONUS TIP*** Set the permissions on cont.php to 0777 in the skel folder. That saves at least one step!and finally, @Chris…yeah buddy, it IS all about bulk. If I only build five stores, what if I picked the wrong five keywords? I’m screwed, I get no traffic, no sales, I’m done. At least with a hundred sites, I’m bound to hit on at least a couple of them and I don’t have to get all uptight if I’m not making $100/day on that one site.
Later guys, keep on building!

jtrigsby.com: I’m building them at my own pace and the SKEL folder comes very handy in the reseller account.
I have other sites to take care like 1 Cool File and update. For now, I create a basic BANS using my own default template(simple) with 3 keywords each. I don’t even add a banner(only the first few ones got one). I do a BMD run and create the next BANS. Once they I have done them, I will come back and do some tweaking, add links, banners, keywords … By then, I hope that some of .info will be indexed.
The next round, I will use pre-owned domains.
I don’t have many BANS done but I did made near $2 so far(pre-owned traffic). I made .11 on a .info(new). I can now retire for 1 minute.
Seriously, once the indexing comes in on my BMD runs, I will be in a better position because the keywords I used did not have any anchor text.

Sounds like our plans are very similar. I worked pretty hard to get them all setup with three keywords, some basic text and minimal changes. Only a couple got custom banners and the rest are going to sit there and age for a while. I think I’m over the $10 point so far…not earth shattering but it is $10 I didn’t have last month!
Don’t know if you’ve noticed it yet or not but there does appear to be an unusual absence of revenue from sign-ups in the EPN reporting right now. Hopefully we’ll all be surprised when we wake up one morning to discover they’ve fixed it and we all had 100 sign-ups during the month! At least that’s what I’m keepin my fingers crossed for.
Good luck with the sites!- Thom

I was able to purchase BANS this last weekend along with a reseller account. I’m in the middle of switching my wordpress sites to BANS. Between CJ and EPN, since I started these sites March 30, with a total of 12 sites I’ve made $114. Some sites still aren’t indexed though

jtrigsby.com: lol (I whish that too
)Yes, the reports are not full. For example, you see the clicks but not the bids for a campaign. You have to select “ebay US” to see the bids. We will need to be patient with reports.
Btw, you have a nice banner but I removed you BANS link. You don’t want competition for those keywords from another lazy BANSer. Plus, I could find all your other BANS and save time on the research(I won’t do that). That’s why Vic don’t tell us except for his paintball BANS and it would be stupid to compete with him on that one

Wow! $114 that’s more than me so far. Vic mentioned to be patient because it does take time to be indexed.
