Well, it's been a while since I last updated my blog and for good reasons: I was doing Internet marketing and for the last month creating my community site or site de rencontre in French: 1coupleavie.com

It's a community for those looking for a serious relationship on the long term but understand French since I target the Canadian market and mostly my hometown of Quebec City. Sometimes, you have to build it so she will come..to you lolll Okay, some might not know that I vaguely referring to a line in the movie Field of Dreams.

I'm a bachelor/IMer so it made sense to me to build my own site to my own specs but by also help my friends find true love too.

My Skadate Review:

To help me build the site, I decided to use the Skadate(aff.) script.

Before I chose that script, I did my research but did not try other scripts to be honest with you. Unfortunately,  it was rare to find real reviews about Skadate(aff.) since some were fake reviews that either wanted to make a sale or  just bash the script.

What better way to write a mini review Skadate by using an actual site: my own site(French).

The installation

The installation took a few days and had delays because of the weekend when I ordered my script. They are very strict about protecting their script.

The hosting

When they installed the script(it's free), they did it on my reseller account. But, it was slow as hell because my reseller account was not supporting a feature: nginx compatible.

So, I took the plunge and switch to a dedicated server instead of a VPS.  For me, it was my first dedicated server and a higher price point to start with than I'm used too. I got great support making the move since they did it for free.

I chose the Standard Dedicated Server because I did not want to move again if I had gone with VPS. Based on the forum and the expectation of the number of users I will get in the next months, it was better than the  Basic Dedicated Server that cost a little less. I did not want to take the chance and move once more thus delaying my launch.

To Be French or Not To Be French

One of the features I looked for the most was it needed to be available in a French version. By design, the script support multiple languages. You just need to try the Admin demo to better understand that part.

But when it was installed, the French texts were not loaded by default. Only English was loaded since it's the main market. I had to installed it myself  but was simple to do.  The downside is that the values are missing French accent and some of the text are translated too much word for word. In time, the translation will be fixed but did a lot of them.

Careful about the translation. Sometimes, I forgot to close a HTML tag thus give weird results. Sometimes, I suspect it was text that were not properly closed or created when it was translated by them.

Show me the Features

Wow! I see a lot of features and potential from this script everyday. Plus, they continue to upgrade it. The features page will tell you more  about it and you can even suggest some to them. The ones with the most votes will considered in later functions.

They have a build in very basic affiliate and referral system. But, I would had like to allow members to promote my site using a referrer link instead of just be able to use the internal email recommend feature. This way, without needing for a member to register as an affiliate,  a referral link could be used on Facebook or a blog.

To Pay or To Be Free

You can create an entire free site, pay only site or a mixed of the two options. I took the last one but made it very affordable.

You have a lot of options and it's hard to decided what's free or not and what's only available to member only or not. I was a member of such sites in the past so it gave me a better perspective on what to charge and offer for free.

You can use the Credit system. You want to promote your profile, buy credits. Wand to offer a gift, use your credits....

You can also offer recurring or one time subscription to members. In my case, you can see who saw your profile but you must be a paid  member. I could had used the credits system too if I wanted for free members to get that features.

Support

Before I asked a question, I checked the forum. If it's not the answer I'm looking for, I write a ticket and it get answered fairly fast depending of when I wrote it. They don't have a 24/7 support so I rely on the forum.

Why? Because you get the first month free then you pay a monthly support. It's optional but I might have to do that for the next few months. You should consider that in your launch cost.

But to get the most of it, get to a test phase quicker to get the bugs out sooner. I'm not a machine so today, I decided to open it in test phase so that I can check the server performance,  search criteria with a real profiles, chat ... by having real people using the community. I can even stopped new members  until I fix what's broken or deficient.

The past week, I asked a few friends to take it on a spin for me. But since their time was limited, they could not do it more than I expected. But, I did learn a lot more on how people will react during the process of just subscribing.

I had to write a ticket because my friends could not upload photos greater than the 2500 x2500 but lesser than 5MB. They were photos that were small(2MB) but bigger than the maximum resolution. Now, I support 3500x3500 photos because I had to raised the PHP memory_limit to 128MB instead of 64MB(default). I wasted time on that one so check if your hosting allow that in your package.

Selecting the templates

They have a lot of templates based of the type of site you want to create(social, dating, adult, business). I selected the SweetDate one in my case. My friends find it very useful and great to use. But, until I'm ready, I'm refraining of make major changes.

I concentrated on the main page and the graphics. You can download the PSD of the theme but some of the graphic did not have the PSD so I had to create one myself to make it French.

Field of Dreams

You can configure a lot of the fields and I'm still getting the hang of it. But,  I decided to stop adding fields for the profiles because I wanted my site  to be too perfect. I will had them along the way based on the feedback from members. If I would had done that first, I could had started testing sooner with more people.

Conclusion

Some are complaining on the forum that the script is too slow. Because of the way it's done(multiple language) and the features it support, I suspect they had to balance those versus speed . Then again the word version exist so they will  make a better optimize script in a later major update.  The price of the servers are getting lower that you can just get more horse power until this get done. I know, it's not perfect but what is nowdays?

It's my mini review of Skadate(aff.) based on my first month using or should I write ...configuring  it because you have a lot to do. I suggest again that you use the Demo Admin Panel to get a better feel on how to use it before buying. I'm glad I did.

I hope I gave you an honest view point and a way for you to better plan ahead of the things you could face when using Skadate(aff.) or any other scripts like this one.

When I first heard of Auto Blog Samurai (aff.), my thinking was cool, a new way to make money for newbies/expert alike. Since I did not bought it, I at least watched the 61 minutes video of the webinar they had done because they showed the Auto Blog Samurai software they are selling.

But here are few things I still wonder about that were not  really answered in the video IMHO and  few things to consider. Was I a sleep or what?

To host or not to host?

They are using third parties hosting(Blogger, WordPress) to publish the auto blogs. It's a doubled sided sword since on one hand, you don't pay for hosting your blog but on the other hand, they can also banned that blog thus will have to redo your work again.

I might be a control freak, but I prefer to control my hosting solution than relying on a third party too much. I know, this will raised the price of doing business.

This does not mean you can't use them to get backlinks to your money site in your overall linking strategy.

That's one thing to consider.

Where is the traffic?

I understood where they take the content(more later) but how will it bring content without using backlinks(SEO) to the auto blog? Yes, once saved, it will bring a trickle of traffic from the RSS feed submitting/pinging. But is it enough to make a $1/day auto blog? Perhaps.

Of course, if you did not take a good paying keyword, you just create another auto blog since it's free to do. Yes, having your own domain name, it's a risk too. I know that very well with .info of last year.

Is it really auto updating?

They showed how to get the content and that's cool. But I was under the impression that you still needed to add to it your self from time to time even if part of it was post dated in advance. I presume that you must keep the software running all the time to remind you that one of the blog is about to not have any current post.

But if you have a RSS feed showing on the front page or sidebar, that will be auto updating itself. However, if the keyword is time base on a hot product, in a few months that product might be "old news" thus not make you money.

That the importance of choosing the right keyword... again.

Diversify source of income?

The video showed many ways to add different  income streams using Auto Blog Samurai at the same time. It might just be for the demo but I would suggest to you  to select one per blog.

This way the person will only click on the  product and not be confused by too many options given to them. If they click, that's because they are more interested to buy thus more targeted. That my opinion/suggestion.

Also, if you use Adsense on all your blogs, you will be smart price since some of your blogs will only pay pennies while other would had paid you dollars per clicks. I seen it with my own account and the reason I removed Adsense for most of my sites.

Mass banning in your future?

If Auto Blog Samurai becomes too popular all of sudden, I bet you that Google will find a way to either banned them or deindex them. You always have a trace somewhere/somehow. Having mentioned that it could be short lived, you could still learn a lot and make enough money to start alternatives until this happens. When, I don't know?

Remember when BANS became hot in 2008 or Niche Devil in 2009? Those sites were all deindexed a few months later and I lost most of that income myself. It's a risk that you should be aware of.

BANS grew by a 100K in a few months. Now, imagine many creating 1000s of blogger or WordPress blogs  all of sudden because it's free and the of the ease of use of  Auto Blog Samurai?

Conclusion

Me, I have enough on my plate(niche blogs)  for now that I don't have the time. If I had, I would had tested out since the cost is acceptable for me.

But do I recommend Auto Blog Samurai to everyone? Yes and no.

Yes, if you expect it to be short lived, can accept the risk/learning experience and ready to reinvest part of the money into alternatives from the start.

And a No for those that thinks it's too much work/risk  for a possible short pay out and that don't want to reinvest that money into more alternatives from the start.

My intent was not to discourage you but to warn you of possible issues of using Auto Blog Samurai. At least, check out the video to see if it's for you!

Who would like this kind of return for a $24.95 investment?   Me!  Me!  Me! Everyday, I get this kind of offers and depending on how I'm feeling, if I got the time and the source of the email, I often dismissed them out of hand or look at it very quickly. But not this one and here is why.

You see I was just about to even unsubscribed from this Internet Marketer list  because I taught he was overdoing it too much in my opinion in the last few weeks.

To be fare, I bought a good product from him in the past but taught he was promoting too much things at the same time. The error was mine, I admit, because those products were mostly from him. He is a busy guy.

Good timing

The timing was also good because I was hit hard in the last few months by Google(like many IMers) and was looking to diversify more my sources of revenue. So that offer came at the right time for me.

Autopilot?

All The Set-Up, Writing, Selling, Hosting Taken Care Of By A Million Dollar Blogging Team

Like you can read above,  they will create a blog for you with writing, set-up, hosting, selling, ...managed it for you.

Of course, I can imagine that I will have to do some work like promoting it on my side which is fine. I don't mind that.

Show me the money!

They also used examples(intro above) of making a boat load of money which could be true ... eventually.  But my expectations is more around $100/month for that Premium blog for the first few months.  Sure, if I do get $1000+ on my first week, I will not complain one minute.

On the sales page, they don't mentioned that it's a monthly investment of $24.95  and I only saw it after the purchase was done and printed my invoices. It's my partly fault but would had like to know it more upfront. But, you can deduce it because of the things they will do for you on your blog each month.

But, if I do make $100/month but it cost me $24.95/month I will make $75/month in profits from that site. Not bad if you ask me and a pretty good investment when/if it will be $200, $500, $1000+ ... per month

But here is the deal ... so far

I did not have my blog yet and it's been more than a week that I ordered it and they mentioned a 24 hour delay. Did I get scammed?

No because: I'm patient and you need patience to do Internet Marketing anyway.

I also sent an email 72 hours later but did not get a response. I finally opened a support ticket(bottom of the sales  page). They replied the same day that had servers issues thus the delay with my blog. I bet they are overwhelmed by the demand of such a deal. :p

I did not want a refund since I still think this could be a good source of revenues but time will tell if I'm wrong or not. Btw, that's what we call taking action!

I can also canceled later on if I don't even meet a minimum of return on my investment of $24.95/month.

Conclusion

Yes, I wanted to give you a real review first. But, I had dilemma that by the time you read my review, this offer might not be available anymore or the door would closed for them to be able to catch up on the current orders and would reopens months later if they do.

Yes, I'm taking also a chance and by presenting you this opportunity now, I'm giving you the chance to take a leap of faith with me.

Yes, some will not take it and its' their choice but...

That's what Internet Marketing is about: You take action in the hope of making money from a site, if not you just learned something new for the next one. That's business!

Heck, just go watch the video and make up your own mind. I did my choice and will make a review in the future if it did worked or not.

Those of you that will take action now will either sunk $50-75(stay 2-3 months minimum) like me or be richer beyond their expectations if very lucky on the first month. But, just don't expect miracles on the first month but cross you fingers that it works ; ).

Not so long ago, I was put in touch with a young woman that wanted a basic site for her new business. Sorry,  it's a local French speaking business in Québec city(ville de Québec).

In her case, she does not have any computer yet. Yes people, not everyone are online 24/7 and the money goes to something more important: her children.  That, I can understand and I'm always impress when people take control of their financial future even in this economy.

Working with MyStarterBlog

I used a current MyStarterBlog theme but modified it to her basic need. For now, the site is like a online brochure and I will update myself. Later if she get a computer, I will teach her how to update the site herself if she want.

She work mainly from her cell phone to take appointments so for now, I removed the contact page.You do need basic HTML/CSS to modify the theme.

For the graphic part, she was redoing her business cards and I asked her designer for a few jpg(logo, background). He was nice enough to email me those.

The site is done so that I don't have a RSS feed or news section. I only used the [homepagecontent] and a few pages/tags. Like I said, it's mostly to have an online  precence  and refer clients to the site to get more information after giving her business card to them.

Since I don't use any backend, I don't need to care about security issues. Also, it's light and fast for the server.

Making money with local businesses sites

Depending on your skills, you could start making a  basic site using MyStarterBlog to businesses near you. You could add some SEO services too if they have the budget.

Conclusion

In theory, it's something that could be done quickly if you have the content of the site first.

For me, it was a way to test the possibility of converting an English theme to French. Also, show what's possible to do with MyStarterBlog by going beyond the normal uses.

When I launched MyStarterBlog in February, I converted a static WordPress blog to MSB. That blog had 200+ posts thus perfect to make an importing WP test. That site was not updated since mid March of 2008.

Unlike a conventional site, this one is mostly consisting of pictures so the content is not very search engine friendly for long tail keywords. I keep that site because it's a door to a niche that most IM might stay away.  If you have read my blog before, I wrote about that niche and blog once about it.

Some stats

Because that blog mostly relied on very cheap CPM ads for revenu, the loading speed is very important.  The more pages that are viewed, the better the visitor will stay or click on an ad.

The results are preliminary but I noticed that I had an increase in revenue of 66% versus February. Of course, the site was converted to MSB on February 21. I also changed host and February is shorter by a few a days.  Even if I take that into account, I can say that my revenu did overall increased.

To be fair, I checked my history and March is my biggest earning month so far. It beat the December record by 12% and January by 14%. Those were the 2 previous months with the highest earning. Also, a lot of people have Holiday vacation thus had more time to surf.

The page viewed for March was 3.34 pages/visit versus 2.50 pages in December.

The month of April/May will give me more data but I do expect to earn a little more from that site. I did not add links to that site for a very long time either.

Conclusion

Any additional increase in revenue is a  good thing in this economy even if it's small.

The upside of using MyStarterBlog now is that I don't have to deal with upgrading WordPress anymore.

So, if you have a simple static WP blog, why not convert it to MyStarterBlog?

In the last few days, my Is Site Built It A Scam? post about Lis's Site Build It Scam Review took an expected turn. I was the first to react about Lis post because my MyStarterBlog was mentioned and the comments of SBIers.

Then Vic made a video with SBI Noobs are funny(warning language) and followed that with this post Site Build It Review Or SBI Review What Ever!.

Griz then wrote Site Build It on his How To Make Money blog.

Vic and Griz asked their readers to help Lis too and me(a few did) by linking to our posts. Readers/bloggers responded to that call.

Many never used SBI but can still form an opinion on the service from their point of view. That's what I did and SBIers were respectable in their comments on my blog when writing about my opinion.

I never got hate email like Lis reported and others from SBIers. I deleted a few post(double content) that were in Askimet and I approved/de-spammed a few there too.  I gave both side a chance to comment.

But in the case of X versus Y, sometimes Askimet/time zone/moderation could delay a comment so people should not accuse a blogger of doing censorship. Yes, a blogger own their blog and they can do that too. Also, some comments could go above common decency that the blogger has the right to censor. I have an high tolerance on that and expect not cursed word. I try to keep my blog family friendly for the most part.

Like I mentioned in my comments, I don't mind a fan defending her/his product or service a fan is using  if they can be honest and mentioned the flaws too. Zealots never see flaws.   If they(fans) also point to the flaws , they can suggest modifications to owners, they can improve the product or service in the long run. Heck, the owner can take the opportunity to act on those suggestions.

For example, I don't think SBI is a scam and I suggest to SBI to lower a lot the price. It won't make me use the service but that will counter the negative press they are having at the moment.  And that's the conclusion most have of the SBI service: At point in time, it's an overpriced solution when you have free and less costing alternatives. I know, those are not centralize like on SBI.

Lis wrote an interesting post called: Site Build It Scam Review.

Thanks for mentioning MyStarterBlog.

I wanted to leave a comment but found that a post would be better since it's content on my blog and expected to write a lot.

Anyway, Lis found, mostly the same SBI users, commenting and I give Lis credit on approving those comments. They corrected/answered Lis and that's okay. Some comment were so long that I guest some of them were writing their comments at the same time thus duplicating the same answers.  It's a longer read than I expected.

I can also understand using the word "scam" from her point of view when there are many other cheaper alternative elsewhere. But for someone who start in this business, it could be a good way to have everything centralized in one place. That's is you have the first $300 to invest.

But since they show them what they need to do, why should they pay $300 for the the second site?  A user could have a site with 300 products while another have 100 sites with 3 products each.   The second user would be using the tools a little more but pay $300/year!!! Is it fair for her/him?

For example, if SBI would let them use the tools on unlimited sites with a small extra fee, this would be a better deal for users.   Otherwise, just buy software(with free lifetime updates like BMD, FBF, Keyword Elite, SEO Elite... ) and create unlimited sites at a lower hosting cost. Creating the site is not the problem. It's the getting traffic part that's time consuming and dull.

For some with only 1 site  and earning that money back, $300 could be enough for them to keep using SBI and not to have to deal with the technical side of their site. Then again, they remain at their "mercy". That's the real downside. I know that from personal experience with a site I bough from another person(not SBI). I know a lot more now by being more independent.

Last year, I bought around $700-1000 in SEO software. Then again, I have more than 100 domains. If I had used SBI, my cost even with their 2 for 1  or spring sale would be much higher ($10 000-15 000).  At $300, you must be sure that you chosen the right products or it will be a costing lessons for a newbie.

In the next weeks, I plan to be in a "build sites mode" thus increasing and diversifiyng my revenue streams.  I will pay $1 for .info so if I failed, then it's less than 1 hour +$1 I waisted. I will learned months later if I picked the right keywords. If I'm wrong, at least it's not $300 per site being waisted.

But with all those comments, Lis was not answered on the cost of getting you domain out of SBI if someone would want to stop using SBI.

Also, some mentioned that they own their sites. Okay, but following on Lis questions, what if someone used a graphic belonging to SBI. Can they take it with them? Are the images exclusive to SBI or royalty free?

Those that answered are those, I'm sure die hard users, who made or about to make their $300/year back and I'm glad for them. But those few commenter's anti-SBI were accused of not following the steps.

This bring me to ask what is the success rate using a centralize model like SBI after 1 year? I specified 1 year to be fair because you have to put in the time in any model.

Also, what's the average profit margin of those who made more than $300? It's important because if you put 100 hours(part time) but only made a $200/year profit then, it's not a good ROI. Most would not work for $2/hour, at least in develop countries(cost of living).

Some mentioned getting targeted traffic. Okay, but what's their converting targeted traffic reate? If you have 500 targeted visitors/day but no one buys/clicks then it's crap traffic. The only traffic that counts is the traffic that earn you money. It's a business not a blog for the social bragging rights of visitor or RSS readers.

One comment made me laugh about typos on her blog. This showed me the lack of understanding of getting traffic from typos. Heck, I make a lot of typos since English is not my first language. I do try but I'm sure that if I read at my older post I would ask myself what I was thinking at that time. I'm not saying that you should make types on purpose.

So, is Site Build It a scam?

From reading the answers from comments, I don't think so. For me, it's over price and even more on the second site. It's my opinion.

Also, Lis was slammed for making too many mistakes in her review of Site Build It Scam.  But how many potential clients would read the same thing on SBI and passed on it because they were thinking the same thing as her? That's the most important point here that SBIers missed.

I had great success using NB since I started using them in December.  CB is less attractive since you don't have freebies like NB but still pay more when you get a sale.

You must register and start using them.

May you use Adsense so that you don't get smart priced.

I did not have time in the past months to track/use Adsense properly.  This cost me money by being smart priced and I accepted that.

Starting in February, I started to remove my Adsense code from most of my sites. I also show my ads to search engines only. The net effect is that it increased my Adsense earnings per click by 64%. I'm not finish removing them.

Seeing the results, I'm planning to use NBN content and MyStarterBlog to create high paying blog niches.

Exclusive: In the past week, I was updating MSB to v1.6(out really soon) to allow a blogger to show or not ads on a post by post basis. If I find a post that's not really paying because of the content, I can decide to show an affiliate offer instead. This feature is in the registered version only.

May you build sites(MyStarterBlog) like there is no tomorrow so that you can't take many days off with your family tomorrow.

By creating a lot of auction targeted sites, you increase your overall passive income.  Not every site will pay you and that's okay. The average I see from newbies is in the 15% and 30%+ for the expert. But the more you build sites, the better you will get at finding paying keywords.

Let's say you buy a domain from 1and1(privacy included) and host it for $1.25/month . You create a quick auction sites plus do a BMD run in 1 hour. The total cost is $24 per year + your time. Now, you could lower that price by using a reseller hosting account(use coupon: xxxx).

Exclusive: Last week, I was about to build like crazy for the rest of March but it was not to be.  In MyStarterBlog v1.6, me and Rob(MSB Ebay Plugin) modified a lot in the themes so not to leave a footprint.  That's was the price I was ready to pay to lower my chance of getting deindexed by Big G. I was thinking long term here.

If you want to have a family blog/site or are doing Internet marketing like me, you need to get web hosting. I found cheap web hosting($1.25/month) and reseller hosting($8.70/month). But I also want a minimum of service/quality behind it. If you did not want the lifetime THC offer from a few months ago or found it's too much money for you, this will be a good alternative for you to get you started.

I found this hosting company a few months ago  but I wanted to test it first. Since it's now done, I'm planning to plan to move some of my domains to my new reseller package in the coming weeks. The backbone is from The planet who also serve Host Gator(my current host) which I know is a solid hosting company in the industry.

Space, Bandwidth and Saving money

In order to be able to give us a cheap price, the space(300MB) and bandwidth(3Gig) are lower than the "big boys" compared to their the basic plan. But at $1.25, it's only $15/year when you pay once a year. The space and bandwidth is enough for someone starting a few targeted blogs with MyStarterBlog for example. If you get bigger, you just upgrade to an higher package.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, hosting companies will suspend your account if you overload constantly their server. For example, if you get 20 000 visitors everyday, don't be surprise if they ask you to move to a dedicated server. At that point(20K), you should be able to make a lot of money to pay for it anyway.

Me, I want targeted paying traffic so I'm able to pay less money for my hosting. For example, I'm paying $24.95/month with one of my HG reseller package. But after looking at my stats, I was only using 1 Gig/month out of 250GB allowed.  By getting the $8.70/month(15Gig/month), I will be saving a lot of money that I can reinvest in my business(buy more domains). I will still have space/bandwidth to grow.

Why I'm using a reseller package?

Unlike a shared host, all my domains are independent of each other. If one of my site get very popular(20K/day) for some reasons, only that domain will be suspended and not my whole account. If I want someone to do custom work for me, I just give access to that domain only.

If I decide to sell a domain made using MyStarterBlog, I can offer hosting for a few months to a year and make money again.

Conclusion

At this time, I'm using a few host to diversify my IPs. Also, many of my domain names are on 1and1 because I get free Whois privacy and pay less per year. But, a lot of them are hosted elsewhere and now have a new hosting home.
