Using the list from
zap2it, I took the
25 top grossing movies of 2007 to analyze the impact on the
Blu-Ray/
HD-DVD format war and what is/will be available. The amount of money is the box office at the theater.
I started to use the
top 15 but seeing that
Blu-Ray was in a better overall position, I took the whole list to see if
HD-DVD would improve. I kept the
Top 15 numbers anyway for comparison.

Total HD-DVD: 4 (26%) ($1,016,317,000 or 254M/movie)
Total Blu-Ray/HD-DVD: 3 (20%) ($669,694,914 or 223M/movie)
Blu-Ray is the bigger winner from the list with
11 movies or
73% being available to the
Blu-Ray format.
HD-DVD is not too far behind
with
7 movies or
46%.
Blu-ray only movies
grossed 21% less money per movie than
HD-DVD and
10% less than
Blu-Ray/HD-DVD That should reflect in media sales later on.
I Am Legend is still in theater and the gap may fall a little.
8 movies were sequels.
Blu-Ray had 5 and
HD-DVD had 2. Only 1 for
Blu-Ray/HD-DVD
The top 25
Total Blu-Ray: 12 (48%) ($2,064,171,216 or 172M/movie)
Total HD-DVD: 8 (32%) ($1,506,588,702 or 188M/movie)
Total Blu-Ray/HD-DVD: 5 (20%) ($905,721,487 or 181M/movie)
Blu-Ray is the bigger winner from the list with
17 movies or
68% being available to the

with
12 movies or
48%.
Blu-ray only movies
grossed 9% less money per movie than
HD-DVD and
5% less than
Blu-Ray/HD-DVD. That should reflect in media sales later on. A few more movies are still in theater and the gap will favor
Blu-ray.
American Gangsters and
Bee Movie will make much less than
Alvin and the Chipmunks or
Enchanted that are just a few weeks old.
HD-DVD gain a a few percent points against
Blu-ray.
Only 1 more sequels by
Blu-Ray/HD-DVD
Conclusion
I noticed that
Blu-Ray only movies made more money overall than
HD-DVD. With many sequels,
Blu-Ray played safe thus getting less money per movie but releasing more movies .
The
top 5 were occupied by 4 sequels. The 5th will also have a sequel. All 5 were big summer movies.
Those are the facts based on those numbers.
Will the list next year will be all:
Blue,
Red or
Black?
